An O-ring is a sealing element with a circular cross-section, hence it is also known as an O-ring. It is widely used in various mechanical equipment, playing a sealing role in specified temperatures, pressures, and different liquid and gas media, in static or moving states.
The sealing principle of O-rings is based on their shape and material characteristics. During installation, the initial compression of the O-ring in the radial or axial direction determines its initial sealing capacity. When system pressure acts on the O-ring, a sealing force is generated, which increases with the increase of system pressure. Under pressure, the shape of the O-ring changes, similar to a liquid with high surface tension, thereby achieving pressure transmission.
The characteristics of O-ring include small size, easy installation and disassembly, both dynamic and static seals are available, static seals have almost no leakage, single piece use of bidirectional seals, low dynamic friction, and low price. It is suitable for various types of sealing applications, such as rotary motion, reciprocating motion, and static sealing. In rotary motion seals, O-rings are limited to low-speed rotary sealing devices.
In short, O-ring seals are a reliable sealing element widely used in various mechanical equipment, with various excellent characteristics, such as small size, easy assembly and disassembly, and both dynamic and static seals available.
